Specialist researcher in using state-of-the-art instrumentation for research on the effects of biotic and abiotic stress on crops through remote sensing, spectroscopy, infrared thermography, and the development of low-cost wireless-spatialized sensor networks (Digital Agriculture). Other scientific-technological research interests are software-hardware engineering, the Internet of Things (IoT), and automatic control systems. Doctor Fuentes-Peñaililo is also the coordinator of the International Initiative for Digitalization in Agriculture (IIDA). This initiative corresponds to a multinational collaboration between; public institutions, international academic groups, and most relevant companies in the productive sector to develop new technologies adapted to local needs to combat the effects of climate change in small, medium, and large farms.
